I'll be honest with you guys, this blog post isn't going to be very long. Everything that I really want you to know and all of the things I want to hit home for you, will be in the video below. Its a bit long, but take my word on it..it's worth it.
This week in my Multicultural Education class, we've been going over poverty and how it can effect a child's learning. Many students come to school very hungry and hardly getting any sleep from the night before. I knew cases like that happened every so often, I witnessed a few myself during my field experience last semester, but after watching this video in class, I did not realize to the extent that this was happening. Many children in schools have free or reduced lunches, and even then, the school provides each class with snacks. Students may help themselves to one, if not two snacks a day. My cooperating teacher last semester told me that she never stopped the children from taking a 3rd or 4th snack either, she said she never knows who would be eating dinner that night.
There's not much I can say about this further. Sure, the teachers can give you the facts, you can read about them on the internet, but until you watch a video like this or experience something like this for yourself, you may never understand. After everything I learned throughout those videos in class, the one thing I can promise you I took away from class that day was genuine appreciation for what I have. Sure, my family struggles for money and they're willing to be open with me about those issues, but nothing to this extent. I wake up every day thankful for what my family has. Because in all honesty, it can happen to anyone. Believe me, if you have a soft spot for children, I can guarantee you may need a box of tissues for this one.
